TARTUFFE, is the theatrical comedy play by French playwright, actor, and poet Molière.

Molière was widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and world literature. He originally performed the first version of TARTUFFE (which translates in English as a hypocrite) in 1964. Giving more context to the play, the word ‘tartuffe’ is used in both contemporary French and English to describe a “religious hypocrite who feigns virtue.

In the play, TARTUFFE is a sanctimonious scoundrel. He is taken into the wealthy household of Orgon and under the guise of assisting to the family’s spiritual and moral needs, he almost destroys them. Orgon’s wife, Elmire, sees through TARTUFFE’S extreme piety and exposes him.
