PARADISE SQUARE is a stage musical based on a book by Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Craig Lucas and Larry Kirwan. It premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in April 2022.

In 1863 America, the Civil War is ongoing. PARADISE SQUARE is predominantly set in the notorious 20-block area of Five Points in Manhattan, New York City where Black and Irish immigrants live and work together in an unlikely neighbourhood. The play focuses on the residents who visit the local saloon, PARADISE SQUARE.

For a brief period of time racial harmony is realised until President Lincoln enlists the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army which ends in the NY Draft Riots of July 1863.

What is Paradise Square about?

Set during the American Civil War, Paradise Square focuses on the Black and Irish immigrants, living and working together in Five Points, Manhattan. As President Lincoln announces the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army, the play focuses on a story of racial harmony undone by a country at war with itself.
