OEDIPUS REX, also referred to by its Greek title Oedipus Tyrannus is an Athenian tragedy first performed around 429BC.

Written by ancient Greek Tragedian Sophocles, who also went on to write Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone, OEDIPUS REX is widely regarded as one of the greatest tragedies, and often one of the greatest plays, ever written. The play took second place at the City Dionysia (an ancient Greek festival to celebrate the God Dionysus) when originally performed, and has been staged many times throughout history since.

A modern English-language adaptation of OEDIPUS REX starring Helen Mirren and Mark Strong and directed by Robert Icke, titled simply Oedipus, was planned to play in London’s West End in 2021, however this has been delayed indefinitely. Fans are still hopeful that this or another similar production will go ahead some time in the future.
