The 1939 long-running comedy play LIFE WITH FATHER by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse ran at the Empire Theatre on Broadway for over seven years earning it the title of the longest running non-musical play on Broadway – a record it still holds today.
LIFE WITH FATHER is an adaptation of an autobiographical book of short stories compiled in 1935 by Clarence Day. As Day writes about his family in a light-hearted tone, he paints a picture of a New York upper-middle-class family’s life in the 1890s. Paired with affectionate irony and humour, the comedy in everyday situations is emphasised through Day’s understated, matter-of-fact style to narrate his personal story.
The theatrical adaptation of LIFE WITH FATHER has since been adapted for both film and television.
