Carol Churchill’s CLOUD 9 is a satirical, two-act dark comedy play which first premiered at Dartington College of Arts in the county of Devon, UK in 1979.

CLOUD 9 features inventive and intelligent casting that challenges societal norms and allows the audience to question ‘typical’ social structures. In Act One and Act Two, each actor portrays different characters. It evaluates old-fashioned perspectives on gender roles and sexuality within the British Empire as adults play children; men and women play opposite genders; and a white man plays a black man.

What is Cloud 9 about?

Cloud 9 is a satirical, two-act dark comedy play. Act One is set in British Colonial Africa in the Victorian era and follows colonial administrator, Clive, and his family as they work to contain the British colonies. In Act Two, the characters have only aged 25 years yet the story is now set in 1980’s London. It follows the surviving characters and depicts what could happen when limitations of both the comedic genre and Victorian ideology are loosened.
