THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is widely recognised as Oscar Wilde’s most popular play due to its witty dialogue, comedic elements and high farce. It was first performed on 4th February 1895 at the St James’s Theatre in London and focuses on the story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff.
In order to escape their dreary lives, the pair create alter egos named Ernest and attempt to win the hearts of two women who claim to only love men called Ernest. Struggling to keep up with their own stories, Jack and Algy become caught up in a deceptive tale of disguise and misadventure.
Since its premiere, the play has seen many revivals across both theatre and film. A 1952 film adaptation featured Edith Evans who reprised her stage interpretation of Lady Bracknell. Kurt Baker directed a 1992 film which starred an all-black cast and most recently in 2002, Oliver Parker directed a version starring Rupert Everett as Algy and Colin Firth as Jack.
